For more than twenty years, Zalto Denk’Art has approached glassware with a deceptively simple idea: form serves content. A glass should function as a sensory tool, designed to reveal what is in it as precisely as possible.
Now, for the first time, Zalto has applied that philosophy specifically to the world of barrel-aged spirits.
Meet Zalto Cask, the newest addition to the Zalto Denk’Art collection: a new hand-blown spirits glass designed for Whisky, Cognac and other barrel-aged spirits.

Until now, Zalto’s Sweet Wine glass has been the preferred Zalto glass for Whisky and Cognac. But during a series of prototype tastings, something unexpected happened. A taller, more elongated shape with a slender-to-medium-width bowl and cylindrical chimney revealed considerably more precision, finesse and aromatic detail in barrel-aged spirits.
That discovery began a development process involving more than 100 prototypes. Shapes were tasted, compared and refined, sometimes by the smallest of increments.
As Zalto owner and CEO Christoph Hinterleitner puts it:
“It’s the millimetres that make all the difference.”
Why the Shape of a Whisky Glass Matters
Cask is unmistakably a Zalto glass. It is mouth-blown and paper-thin, with the straight side walls and characteristic angles of the Denk’Art collection. But its proportions have been developed specifically for spirits with higher alcohol content.
The straight sides direct the aromas toward a defined focal point without curves or bends interfering along the way. Above them, the cylindrical chimney creates additional distance between the spirit and the nose. The immediate presence of alcohol recedes, allowing more subtle aromas, fruit and nuance to become clearer.
The result is not simply greater aromatic intensity. It is greater definition.
That distinction is important when choosing a glass for Whisky, Cognac or another complex barrel-aged spirit. The goal isn't simply to concentrate alcohol and aroma at the nose, but to allow the different elements of the spirit to emerge with clarity and balance.

More Than a Whisky or Cognac Glass
One of the more interesting discoveries during the development of Zalto Cask was that the glass refused to stay neatly within a single category.
The prototypes were initially conceived with Cognac in mind. But the same shape that performed best as a Cognac glass also prevailed with barrel-aged Grappa. With Whisky, the preference became even clearer.
For Zalto, this reinforced a principle already fundamental to the Denk’Art wine glasses: the optimal shape isn't necessarily determined by category or raw material, but by the character and predominant aromas of what is being tasted.
A barrel-aged Rum and a Cognac may begin with entirely different raw materials, but what they ask of a glass can be remarkably similar.
Austrian distiller Hans Reisetbauer was among the first to taste from Cask. His assessment was succinct:
“For our whiskey, our rum, and our barrel-aged pomace brandies, this glass is simply sensational.”
What Spirits Are Best in the Zalto Cask?
Zalto Cask was developed for Whisky and Cognac, but extensive tastings showed that its shape works across a much broader range of spirits.
It is recommended for Whisky, Whiskey, Cognac, Rum, Armagnac, Mezcal, Grappa, Calvados, Tequila, Marc, Fine and other barrel-aged spirits with structure, depth and finesse.
That makes Cask something unusual: rather than requiring a different specialist glass for Scotch Whisky, Bourbon, Cognac, aged Rum or Mezcal, its design is based on the sensory characteristics those spirits can share.
And Then There Was Mezcal
Mezcal entered the Cask story almost by accident.
Longtime Zalto ambassador and sommelier Aldo Sohm was working on a premium barrel-aged Mezcal at the same time Cask was being developed. He was searching for the right glass and was given the latest Cask prototypes to try.
The same shape prevailed again.
Sohm described Cask as a typically Zalto glass: exceptionally honest and precise, capable of exposing imperfections while at the same time bringing forward delicate fruit, freshness and subtle aromatic detail. He found that the effect even translated to clear Mezcal, where the spirit's smokiness gave the glass something similarly complex to work with.

A Different Way to Taste Whisky and Barrel-Aged Spirits
Traditional spirits glassware often concentrates aroma. Cask takes a more nuanced approach.
Its shape is designed not simply to make a Whisky or Cognac smell stronger, but to create the space and distance necessary for alcohol, fruit, aroma and finesse to come into balance. The objective is clarity: to make the individual characteristics of the spirit easier to perceive.
And that may be the most Zalto thing about Cask.
It isn't intended to flatter what is inside it.
It is intended to reveal it.
Like every glass in the Zalto Denk’Art collection, Cask is mouth-blown. Its paper-thin walls, straight-sided geometry and characteristic angles place it unmistakably within the Denk’Art family, while its shorter stem and modest overall height retain a connection to the traditional culture of drinking and swirling aged spirits.
The Zalto Cask measures 7.2 inches high and 3.3 inches at its widest point, with a capacity of 280 ml.
Zalto Cask launches October 15, 2026.
